With the first round of summer edibles in the ground, the young seedlings are oozing with the promise of banquets to come – you can almost taste it now!
Life really starts ramping up at this time of year, and things are certainly starting to bear fruit in your patch. It’s December! Let the festivities and gardening begin!
Summer temperate gardening can be a fickle thing and January is the best example of how varied it can be. Is it going to be soaking wet or scorching hot? Let’s hope it’s somewhere in the middle but either way, let’s get out and enjoy the new year in our lovely gardens.
By February, life has returned to normal after the holiday break. School is in and most of us have settled back into our usual routines. The garden is still full of colour, with brilliant sunflowers highlighting that we are not quite done with summer just yet. The sun is rising a little later and starting to set earlier but there’s still some heat in it and there will be days when temperatures peak in the high 30s or 40s so keep that in mind with your watering schedule.
Ch-ch-ch-chaaanges! March truly marks a transitional period in the garden. Though the weather can still be very warm, March is the month where the temperature does start to head south a little, especially overnight. The air is turning crisp, and cooler days mean it’s time to get your hands dirty in the garden.
Autumn is a fantastic time to be out and about in your garden. Usually, in most parts of Australia, the weather starts to become milder but there still remains a significant number of sunny days to potter around in.
May is a lovely time of year, made for gardening. Gone are the long hot days of summer, replaced with warm, sunny days and cool, crisp evenings. It’s great gardening weather and your last chance to plant, fertilise and prepare before winter really starts to hit.
With the cooler weather setting in, now’s a perfect time to establish new plants and fill in any gaps in your garden.
With the cold weather, it’s a great time to assess your garden and start planning for spring.
With spring just around the corner, August is all about getting your garden ready to bloom.
When you’re not in the garden, we’ve found some great things to do.
